Bhumitara Foundation
Bhumitara Foundation is a mission-driven nonprofit dedicated to advancing biodiversity conservation, regenerative agroforestry, rural development, and the empowerment of customary communities across Indonesia.
Our name reflects our purpose. “Bhumi” means Earth, while “Tara” is derived from Nusantara, the Indonesian archipelago. Together, they symbolize our commitment to protecting Indonesia’s landscapes, celebrating its rich cultural heritage, and building a sustainable future where people and nature thrive together.
We believe that healthy ecosystems and prosperous rural communities are inseparable. Protecting biodiversity, restoring degraded landscapes, and strengthening sustainable livelihoods must go hand in hand. Through regenerative agroforestry, we promote farming systems that restore soils, conserve forests, capture carbon, and improve food security while creating long-term economic opportunities for smallholder farmers.
At the heart of our work are Indonesia’s customary communities, whose traditional knowledge and stewardship have shaped and protected these landscapes for generations. By partnering with customary institutions, local governments, farmer organizations, women, and youth, we foster community-led solutions that respect cultural heritage while embracing innovation for a changing world.
Beyond conservation, Bhumitara Foundation is committed to inclusive rural development. We strengthen local capacities across the agricultural value chain—from sustainable cultivation and post-harvest practices to value addition, market access, and fair trade—ensuring that rural communities receive greater social, environmental, and economic benefits from their work.
