Meet Pak Iwan: A Vanilla Farmer’s Journey to Sustainable Growth

Bhumitara Foundation

Introduction

Pak Iwan, a 52-year-old vanilla farmer from East Java, has been cultivating vanilla for over 20 years. Living in a small village surrounded by lush green hills, he supports his family of six through his dedication to farming. Despite his experience, Pak Iwan faced numerous challenges that threatened his livelihood and prevented him from reaching his full potential.

The Challenge

Before partnering with Bhumitara Foundation, Pak Iwan struggled with low income due to unfair pricing from middlemen who controlled the market. He lacked knowledge of sustainable farming techniques, relying on chemical fertilizers that degraded his soil quality over time. Access to proper post-harvest processing facilities was limited, resulting in lower-grade vanilla that fetched minimal prices. Most importantly, he had no direct connection to fair markets where he could sell his produce at reasonable rates.

The Solution

In 2021, Pak Iwan joined Bhumitara Foundation’s comprehensive farmer support program. He received training in regenerative agriculture techniques, learning to use organic fertilizers and natural pest control methods. The foundation connected him with a local cooperative, giving him access to shared post-harvest processing facilities where he could properly cure and grade his vanilla beans. Through the program, Pak Iwan gained direct market access, connecting with fair-trade buyers who valued quality and paid premium prices.

“Bhumitara didn’t just teach me new farming methods—they opened doors I never knew existed. Now my children see a future in farming.”

— Pak Iwan, Vanilla Farmer

The Results

Three years later, the transformation is remarkable. Pak Iwan’s income has increased by 150%, allowing him to send his youngest daughter to university. His soil health has dramatically improved, showing higher organic matter content and better water retention. He now produces premium-grade vanilla that commands top market prices, and his success has inspired 15 neighboring farmers to join the cooperative. Most importantly, Pak Iwan has become a community leader, training other farmers in sustainable practices and advocating for fair market access.
