Our Focus

The whole of our work rests on four grounds. They are not separate programs. They are four ways of looking at the same landscape.

Bhumitara Foundation

Biodiversity

Conserve and restore biological diversity across working landscapes, from the microbes in the soil to the canopy overhead, and treat farmland as habitat rather than the opposite of it

Agroforestry

Grow food and income under tree cover, so land stays productive, soil stays covered, and no family depends on a single harvest

Rural Development

Raise smallholder incomes and keep value in the village, so a young person can build a life on the land they were born to

Bhumitara Foundation

Customary Community

Work through the customary institutions that already hold the land, and recognize customary knowledge, tenure, and consent as the ground rules of every program

SGDs Outcome

Of the GEF Bhumitara Foundation Program

SDG 1 – No Poverty

We address the root causes of extreme rural poverty by developing high-value agroforestry systems that integrate premium commodities (e.g. vanilla and cacao) with forest conservation, increasing smallholder incomes and retaining wealth at the village level.

SDG 2 – Zero Hunger

We facilitate the transition from vulnerable monoculture practices to food sovereignty systems by diversifying Multi-Purpose Tree Species (MPTS) and understory food crops, creating a continuous nutritional safety net for farming communities.

SDG 5 – Gender Equality

Through initiatives like Women in Vanilla, we structurally integrate women's leadership across the value chain. Women hold primary control over post-harvest processing, high-tier quality curation, and the financial governance of rural cooperatives.

SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth

We break exploitative extraction cycles by facilitating upstream value addition, such as village-level fermentation and drying hubs, providing decent, skill-based employment for rural youth.

SDG 13 – Climate Action

We accelerate mass carbon sequestration by optimizing multi-tiered canopy structures, while concurrently facilitating rainfall-index parametric climate insurance to protect smallholders' working capital from extreme weather risks.

SDG 15 – Life on Land

We restore biodiversity and terrestrial ecosystem health by treating farmlands as functional habitats and replacing synthetic agrochemicals with biological agents and bio-pesticides.

SDG 16 – Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions

We advocate for absolute recognition of tenurial rights and indigenous territories, institutionalizing Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) to establish inclusive spatial governance and mitigate agrarian conflicts.

SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals

We orchestrate a pan-tropic synergy—bringing together government, academia, global industry, local communities, and the media—to ensure innovations scale across key landscapes.
